Viele Dokumentarfilme aus Israel besitzen eine bemerkenswerte
erzählerische und künstlerische Qualität. Sie finden sich in den
Programmen der internationalen Festivals und bereichern weltweit
ihr Publikum, weil sie die großen Tugenden des künstlerischen
Dokumentarfilms pflegen. Ein ganz und gar persönlicher
Standpunkt ist unverkennbar. Die Geduld und die Kraft, sich mit
einem Thema und seinen Protagonisten oft über Jahre auseinanderzusetzen,
ist bewunderswert. Filme wie diese haben nicht den
Anspruch, die Welt zu erklären. Sie beschränken sich auf das
Beobachten, das Aufzeichnen, das Zeigen und Wiedergeben des
Erlebten und Erfahrenen, und verweigern einfache Antworten.
Viele dieser Filme tragen im Vorspann ein besonderes Gütesiegel:

Lesafa, Eirusei Hadamim – Blood Engagement und im Wettbewerb,
Mahssonim – Checkpoint.
»Lev la-daat – mit dem Herzen sehen« ist für Herz Frank, den
Doyen des künstlerischen Dokumentarfilms, die wichtigste Regel
des engagierten Filmemachens. Wir freuen uns, dass David Fisher,
der Leiter der Foundation, in diesem Jahr unser Gast ist.
The Special Documentary Award at the Munich Documentary Film
Festival 2003 went to Tehora / Purity – a film supported by the New
Israeli Foundation for Cinema & Television. This film tells the story
of Jewish family purification rituals and of subtle female rebellion
within the religious world.
Tehora is one example for the variety of documentary films that the
New Foundation supports; an example that expresses the New
Foundation’s attitude towards controversial subjects without compromising
excellence of cinematic achievement. Contemporary
Israeli society, from social, political, gender and religious aspects,
is complicated and turbulent, fragmented and craving tranquility
and peace … all at the same time. All the possible contradictions
under one roof in one country.
The New Israeli Foundation for Cinema & Television is Israel’s
major documentary film fund. The NFCT was founded in 1993 by
the Ministry of Education and Arts in order to encourage and promote
Israeli cinema. The New Foundation has assisted in the production
of over 170 original films which have been shown in Israel
and around the world. These films have been screened at major
film festivals, and have won many prestigious prizes. As such they
have led the way to international recognition of Israel’s documentary
film-making industry. The fund’s most recent achievement is
the success of the film Checkpoint at IDFA, the International Documentary
Film Festival Amsterdam 2003. The film was awarded the
first prize at the Joris Ivens Competition.
The New Foundation was created within a reality in which the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict reached new boiling points. In its ten
