Eine Geschichte voller Brüche. Die Biographie des litauischen
Emigranten Luis Frank ist geprägt von Gewalt, Exil und Entwurzelung.
Wie viele linke Idealisten kämpfte er im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg
auf der Seite der Republikaner, wurde in Frankreich vom
Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs überrascht und schließlich als
Jude nach Deutschland deportiert. Mit der Emigration nach Mexiko
1943 begann für ihn und seine Familie ein neues Leben.
Die mexikanische Regisseurin Marcela Arteaga folgte seinen Spuren
um den halben Erdball: von Litauen über New York, Spanien,
Frankreich und Deutschland bis nach Mexiko. Sie trifft die Kinder
des kürzlich verstorbenen Litauers, aber auch Menschen, die nie
etwas von ihm gehört haben oder ihn nur aus Erzählungen kannten.
Sie sprechen über einzelne, besondere Momente in ihrem
Leben und die kleinen Details, die es ausmachten. Nach und nach
entsteht aus ihren persönlichen Erinnerungen das vielstimmige
Bild einer Epoche, die der Blick auf die »große Geschichte« meist
verdeckt.

This film remembers Luis Frank, a Lithuanian born at the end of the
19th century. He emigrated to New York in the early 20th century,
worked for the Secret Service during the First World War and joined
the Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War. While he
was there, Frank made two documentary films. Later he was exiled
to Mexico, where he started a new life and founded a family.
Director Marceala Arteaga reconstructs this colourful life through
extensive interviews with friends and acquaintances Frank made
all over the world. But Recuerdos is more than a biography. It is a
journey through history, stopping at many of the most important
events of the past century.
