Venezuela, 2002. Präsident Hugo Chávez, seit vier Jahren im Amt,<br />
hat viel versprochen: mehr Demokratie, weniger Korruption, mehr<br />
Bildung, eine Landreform und die Umverteilung der Gewinne des<br />
weltweit fünftgrößten Ölexporteurs zugunsten der armen Bevölkerung.<br />
Doch er hat starke Gegner und so kommt es am 11. April 2002<br />
zum Putsch. Chávez wird verschleppt, der Kampf um die Macht<br />
entbrennt. Das Filmteam ist genau zu diesem Zeitpunkt im belagerten<br />
Präsidentenpalast und dokumentiert die dramatischen Ereignisse<br />
der folgenden Stunden und Tage. Von der Amtseinführung<br />
der selbst ernannten neuen Regierung über den Aufstand des<br />
Militärs gegen die Führer des Putsches bis zur Rückkehr des<br />
gewählten Präsidenten Chávez.<br />
Die Berichterstattung spielt eine bedeutende Rolle in diesem Polit-<br />
Drama, das in jenen turbulenten Tagen zu einem vorläufigen Höhepunkt<br />
gelangte. Und so erzählt der Film von der alltäglichen Manipulation<br />
durch die Medien, stellt aber gleichzeitig mit seiner Sicht<br />
der Dinge auch die Frage nach der Objektivität der Kamera: Welche<br />
Wirklichkeit bildet sie ab?<br />
In 1998 the people of Venezuela elected Army officer Hugo Chávez<br />
as their president. Although generally popular with the working<br />
class, Chávez has since made many fierce enemies within the middle<br />
and upper classes. Some of the reasons for this are Chávez’<br />
closeness to Cuba’s ‘máximo lider’ Fidel Castro, and well as his<br />
plans to redistribute the countries oil profits.<br />
In September 2001 the independent filmmakers Bartley and<br />
O’Briain went to Caracas to shoot a portrait of this controversial<br />
politician. But when Chávez’ government was toppled by a rightwing<br />
coup they found themselves in the midst of a revolution that<br />
got stuck. Just 48 hours later, Chávez was back in office.<br />
This film captures the many dramatic turns that took place during<br />
this short period. The triumphant speeches of the insurgents, the<br />
rebellion of the military against them and finally, Chávez’ return to<br />
power. Private owned TV-stations supported the coup. The media<br />
is in the focus of attention in this film: the way news was spun for<br />
the people of Venezuela as well as the world press. What happens,<br />
when the revolution, indeed, is televised?<br />
