De fem benspænd
Im Regelwerk des Lars von Trier. 1967 drehte Jørgen Leth den
Kurzfilm Der perfekte Mensch, ein Essay über die Konstruktion des
modernen Konsummenschen. Lars von Trier verehrt diesen Film. Er
bittet Leth, fünf Remakes zu machen – nach Regeln, die der Dogma-Begründer
aufstellen wird. Ist ein Film fertig, treffen sich die
beiden Regisseure zur Sichtung. Je nach Lösung der Aufgabe diktiert
von Trier die Regel zum nächsten Film. Sadomasochistisches
Spiel, teuflischer Pakt oder Dogma-Aufnahmeprüfung? Ziel ist es,
Leth zu »therapieren«: Der Variationsmeister soll vom Perfekten
zum Menschlichen gelangen. Leth aber geht aus jeder Aufgabe
gestärkt hervor. Kein Hindernis bringt ihn zu Fall – und so dreht von
Trier selbst das fünfte Remake.
“Fear and loathing, featuring Lars von Trier” could serve as a fitting
description for this film. In 1967 Danish director Jørgen Leth
made a short film, entitled The Perfect Human. Von Trier greatly
admires this film and reveres Leth. In The Five Obstructions he
puts his fellow-filmmaker and countryman to the test. Leth agreed
to submit himself to an experiment, allowing Von Trier to make up
the rules. The founder of the Dogma movement devised a set of
tough challenges for Leth. He is instructed to re-make The Perfect
Human five times – with increasingly sadistic commands and
extreme limitations. “The results are object lessons in overcoming
filmmakings challenges and frameworks. The contact between the
two directors produces a fascinating spectacle, and the five brilliant
interwoven variations on The Perfect Human are both beautiful
and exciting. In the end, this fruitful experiment brings forth
issues of a filmmakers integrity, the complex ways creativity

Bio-Filmographie JØRGEN LETH, geb. 1937 in Århus. Studium der
Literaturwissenschaft und Anthropologie. Arbeitete u. a. als Journalist,
Autor und Filmemacher. Seit den 60er Jahren Regie bei über
30 Filmen. Mitbegründer der Avantgarde-Filmgruppe AB Cinema.
Er lebt seit 1991 in Dänemark und Haiti. LARS VON TRIER, geb.
1956. Filmstudium in Kopenhagen, ab 1984 eigene Filme. Zus. mit
Thomas Vinterberg verkündete er 1995 das Manifest »Dogme 95«.
