Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> places were targetted more than once between 1914 <strong>and</strong> 1918.<br />

Beached mines <strong>and</strong> those floating in Dutch territorial waters also proved lethal.<br />

The first mines washed up on beaches in September 1914. 132 More than 6,000 o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

followed in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war. 133 Nine naval personnel lost <strong>the</strong>ir lives when <strong>the</strong> mine<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were attempting to defuse exploded in <strong>the</strong> small town <strong>of</strong> West Kapelle, on 16<br />

November 1914. 134 The minelayer Triton <strong>and</strong> minesweeper Zeemeeuw would also fall<br />

victim to foreign mines. 135 It was easier for <strong>the</strong> Dutch to receive compensation from <strong>the</strong><br />
