Housed in guarded camps, <strong>of</strong>ten in dismal conditions, interned troops had every<br />

incentive to break free. The camp at Zeist provides a good example. In November 1914, <strong>the</strong><br />

camp housed about 12,000 Belgians, but conditions <strong>the</strong>re were bleak, especially with <strong>the</strong><br />

onset <strong>of</strong>winter. 65 It was badly-insulated, damp, alive with rats, internees had little to do,<br />
