oil resistance to oil swell<strong>in</strong>g. Polychloroprene is structurally similar to<br />

polyisoprene with a chlor<strong>in</strong>e atom replac<strong>in</strong>g methyl group attached to <strong>the</strong><br />

back b<strong>on</strong>e. This chlor<strong>in</strong>e atom is more electr<strong>on</strong>egative than <strong>the</strong> methyl group,<br />

<strong>and</strong> as such <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>the</strong> resistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material.<br />

Chloroprene rubbers are generally vulcanized us<strong>in</strong>g metal <strong>oxide</strong>. 5-6<br />

The primary cross l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g agent is <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong> which is <strong>use</strong>d al<strong>on</strong>g with<br />

magnesium <strong>oxide</strong>. Lead <strong>oxide</strong>s are sometime <strong>use</strong>d when low water<br />

absorpti<strong>on</strong> is required. Two routes have been proposed for <strong>the</strong> cur<strong>in</strong>g. One<br />

requires <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> atoms <strong>in</strong>to crossl<strong>in</strong>k (scheme 5.1), <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

leads to e<strong>the</strong>r cross l<strong>in</strong>ks (scheme 5.2).<br />
