hardness <strong>and</strong> abrasi<strong>on</strong> resistance. In <strong>the</strong> ASTM D 1765 classificati<strong>on</strong> for<br />

carb<strong>on</strong> blacks about 42 commercial blacks were recognized.<br />

1.4.2b. N<strong>on</strong>-black fillers<br />

22<br />

N<strong>on</strong>-black re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g fillers for rubber <strong>in</strong>clude hydrated <strong>silica</strong>,<br />

calcium <strong>silica</strong>te, <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong>, <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e particle size precipitated calcium<br />

carb<strong>on</strong>ate etc. The <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> coupl<strong>in</strong>g agent is more relevant with <strong>the</strong>se n<strong>on</strong>-<br />

black fillers. 39-42 Re<strong>in</strong>forcement by <strong>silica</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>silica</strong>tes has been reviewed by<br />

Wagner. 43 N<strong>on</strong>-black fillers <strong>in</strong>clude a range <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>organic materials with a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> particle shapes <strong>and</strong> sizes. It is available <strong>in</strong> a broad range <strong>of</strong> sizes<br />

from about 10 to 0.015 micr<strong>on</strong>s. These fillers can broadly be classified as;<br />

a) fillers <strong>use</strong>d to reduce cost b) semi-re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g filler c) re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g filler.<br />

Earlier n<strong>on</strong>-black fillers <strong>use</strong>d were ma<strong>in</strong>ly naturally occurr<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>erals or by-<br />

products <strong>of</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g such as clay, whit<strong>in</strong>g, barytes, <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong>, <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong><br />

sulphide, blanc-fixe, mica, asbestos, kieselguhr, magnesium carb<strong>on</strong>ate, ir<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>oxide</strong>, litharge etc. They were <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> rubber to reduce tack, <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

hardness, improve durability <strong>and</strong> reduce cost. 44-46 O<strong>the</strong>r important n<strong>on</strong>-black<br />

fillers be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> elastomer <strong>in</strong>dustry are alum<strong>in</strong>ium hydrate,<br />

alum<strong>in</strong>ium <strong>oxide</strong> <strong>and</strong> titanium di<strong>oxide</strong>.<br />

The need for more re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g n<strong>on</strong>-black fillers <strong>in</strong> many rubber<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong>s led to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> calcium carb<strong>on</strong>ate, calcium <strong>silica</strong>tes,<br />

hydrated <strong>silica</strong> <strong>and</strong> fumed <strong>silica</strong> between 1940 <strong>and</strong> 1960. These were<br />

characterized by very small particle size much smaller than <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

products <strong>and</strong> similar to <strong>the</strong> re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g carb<strong>on</strong> blacks. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

developments <strong>and</strong> ref<strong>in</strong>ements <strong>in</strong> hydrated <strong>silica</strong> <strong>and</strong> fumed <strong>silica</strong> have taken<br />

place result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> grades for specific applicati<strong>on</strong>s. 47<br />

Silica<br />

Silica is a crystall<strong>in</strong>e compound occurr<strong>in</strong>g abundantly as quartz, s<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>r m<strong>in</strong>erals <strong>and</strong> is <strong>use</strong>d to manufacture a variety <strong>of</strong> materials,
