Table 5.11 Age<strong>in</strong>g resistance <strong>of</strong> filled composites<br />

Tensile strength MPa<br />

C-5 C- 6 C-7<br />

24 15.83 16.20 17.41<br />

48 15.91 18.82 18.92<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>rmal age<strong>in</strong>g, crossl<strong>in</strong>k formati<strong>on</strong> or crossl<strong>in</strong>k breakage can<br />

take place or an exist<strong>in</strong>g crossl<strong>in</strong>k may break <strong>and</strong> a stable l<strong>in</strong>kage can be<br />

formed. After age<strong>in</strong>g tensile strength showed a gradual <strong>in</strong>crease. This<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicates better resistance to <strong>the</strong>rmal degradati<strong>on</strong>. The age<strong>in</strong>g resistances <strong>of</strong><br />

C-6 <strong>and</strong> C-7 vulcanizates are superior to C-5 vulcanizate.<br />

5.4 C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

1. Gum <strong>and</strong> filled composites with 2phr c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al ZnO (C-4 <strong>and</strong> C-8)<br />

showed significant reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> torque values, tensile properties <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r technological properties compared to vulcanizates with 5phr<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al ZnO(C-1 <strong>and</strong> C-5), 2phr ZnO(p) (C-2 <strong>and</strong> C-6) <strong>and</strong><br />

ZnO(s) (C-3 <strong>and</strong> C-7).<br />

2. Filled vulcanizates with 1phr ZnO(p) <strong>and</strong> ZnO(s) (C-9 <strong>and</strong> C-10)<br />

showed poor cure characteristics <strong>and</strong> tensile properties compared to<br />

vulcanizates with 2phr ZnO(p) <strong>and</strong> 2phr ZnO(s) (C-6 <strong>and</strong> C-7).<br />

3. Vulcanizates with lower dosage (2phr) <strong>of</strong> ZnO(p) <strong>and</strong> ZnO(s) were<br />

found to have equivalent cure rate <strong>and</strong> tensile properties compared to<br />

vulcanizates with higher dosage (5phr) <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al ZnO.<br />

4. Tear strength values are superior for vulcanizates with 2phr ZnO(p)<br />

<strong>and</strong> ZnO(s) compared to that <strong>of</strong> vulcanizates with 5phr c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al<br />

ZnO.
