Use <strong>of</strong> <strong>nano</strong> <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong> <strong>in</strong> natural rubber<br />

required for formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accelerator-<strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> complex. This suggests that <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong><br />

<strong>oxide</strong> exerts an <strong>in</strong>fluence bey<strong>on</strong>d <strong>in</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> accelerator complex. The<br />

efficiency <strong>of</strong> ZnO dur<strong>in</strong>g vulcanizati<strong>on</strong> can be enhanced by <strong>the</strong> maximizati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tact between <strong>the</strong> ZnO particles <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> accelerators <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

compound. This c<strong>on</strong>tact is dependant <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> particle, <strong>the</strong>ir shape<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> specific surface area.<br />

In some rubbers such as natural rubber (<strong>NR</strong>) <strong>and</strong> ethylene-propylene<br />

diene rubber (EPDM), <strong>the</strong>re is evidence that a c<strong>on</strong>siderable amount <strong>of</strong> ZnO<br />

is c<strong>on</strong>sumed <strong>and</strong> transformed <strong>in</strong>to ZnS. 12-14 The <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>in</strong> rubber<br />

products has come under <strong>in</strong>creased scrut<strong>in</strong>y due to envir<strong>on</strong>mental c<strong>on</strong>cerns.<br />

The trend <strong>in</strong> rubber <strong>in</strong>dustry is, <strong>the</strong>refore, to reduce <strong>the</strong> <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>in</strong> rubber<br />

products.<br />

This chapter describes <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>nano</strong> ZnO samples prepared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

laboratory <strong>in</strong> dry <strong>NR</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mechanical properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vulcanizates are<br />

evaluated with reference to <strong>the</strong> vulcanizates prepared us<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al<br />

ZnO.<br />

4.2 Experimental<br />

Materials:<br />

Natural rubber <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> this study was IS<strong>NR</strong>- 5 <strong>of</strong> Mo<strong>on</strong>ey viscosity<br />

(ML 1+4,100 0C) 85. C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong> (ZnO(c)), <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong> samples<br />

prepared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> laboratory (ZnO(p), ZnO(s)), stearic acid, high abrasi<strong>on</strong> furnace<br />

black, aromatic oil, antioxidantHS, N-cyclohexylbenzothiazyl sulphenamide<br />

(CBS), tetramethylthiuram disulphide (TMTD), sulphur were also <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> this<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
