4.3.4 Swell<strong>in</strong>g studies<br />

Swell<strong>in</strong>g studies <strong>in</strong> toluene<br />

Table 4.9 shows <strong>the</strong> crossl<strong>in</strong>k density <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> filled vulcanizates.<br />

Crossl<strong>in</strong>k densities were calculated us<strong>in</strong>g Flory-Rehner equati<strong>on</strong>. 16 It<br />

is found that <strong>the</strong> crossl<strong>in</strong>k densities <strong>of</strong> N-6 <strong>and</strong> N-7 vulcanizates are slightly<br />

higher than that <strong>of</strong> N-5 vulcanizate. The high value <strong>of</strong> crossl<strong>in</strong>k density<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firms <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> higher crossl<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> vulcanizates with ZnO(p) <strong>and</strong><br />

ZnO(s) compared to vulcanizate with c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al ZnO.<br />

Swell<strong>in</strong>g resistance <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r solvents<br />

The swell<strong>in</strong>g resistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gum <strong>and</strong> filled vulcanizates were<br />

studied by swell<strong>in</strong>g a cut sample <strong>in</strong> various solvents for c<strong>on</strong>stant weight. The<br />

swell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dex is given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Table 4.10. The swell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dex values <strong>of</strong> all<br />

filled vulcanizates are lesser than that <strong>of</strong> all gum vulcanizates. When <strong>the</strong><br />

forces that hold <strong>the</strong> macromolecules toge<strong>the</strong>r are <strong>in</strong>creased through cross<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ks, <strong>the</strong> high polymer will not dissolve any l<strong>on</strong>ger, but will swell to a<br />

smaller or larger extent. With <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g cross l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, swell<strong>in</strong>g becomes less.<br />

The swell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dex values <strong>of</strong> ZnO(p) <strong>and</strong> ZnO(s) composites are comparable<br />

to that <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong> composites.<br />
