Use <strong>of</strong> antioxidant <strong>modified</strong> precipitated <strong>silica</strong> <strong>in</strong> natural rubber,<br />

chloroprene rubber <strong>and</strong> styrene butadiene rubber<br />

(2001). After complete mix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>the</strong> stock was passed out at a<br />

fixed nip gap. The samples were kept overnight for maturati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The cure characteristics <strong>of</strong> all mixes were determ<strong>in</strong>ed us<strong>in</strong>g Rubber<br />

Process Analyzer as per ASTM st<strong>and</strong>ard D 2084-01. Subsequently <strong>the</strong> rubber<br />

compounds were vulcanized upto <strong>the</strong> optimum cure time at 150°C <strong>in</strong> an<br />

electrically heated hydraulic press. The mould<strong>in</strong>gs were cooled quickly <strong>in</strong><br />

water at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cur<strong>in</strong>g cycle <strong>and</strong> stored <strong>in</strong> a cool dark place for 24 hrs<br />

prior to physical test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Physical properties such as tensile strength, modulus, el<strong>on</strong>gati<strong>on</strong> at<br />

break, tear strength, hardness, abrasi<strong>on</strong> loss, heat build-up, compressi<strong>on</strong> set<br />

<strong>and</strong> flex resistance were studied as per <strong>the</strong> relevant ASTM st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Studies</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> rubber filler <strong>in</strong>teracti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

The stra<strong>in</strong> sweep measurements <strong>on</strong> unvulcanized samples <strong>and</strong><br />

vulcanized compounds were c<strong>on</strong>ducted to study <strong>the</strong> rubber-filler <strong>in</strong>teracti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Filled rubber materials need special <strong>in</strong>struments for rheology. Rubber process<br />

analyzer (RPA-2000 Alpha technologies) is a purposely <strong>modified</strong> commercial<br />

dynamic rheometer. 15 The variati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> complex modulus with stra<strong>in</strong> was<br />

studied for <strong>the</strong> compounds before <strong>and</strong> after cur<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Swell<strong>in</strong>g studies<br />

Swell<strong>in</strong>g studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> composites were c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> toluene to<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir crossl<strong>in</strong>k densities us<strong>in</strong>g Flory-Rehner equati<strong>on</strong>. 16<br />
