Antioz<strong>on</strong>ant efficiency should <strong>the</strong>refore be dependent <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong><br />

diffusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> fresh antioz<strong>on</strong>ant to <strong>the</strong> surface, rate <strong>of</strong> reacti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> antioz<strong>on</strong>ant<br />

with O3 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> antioz<strong>on</strong>ant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rubber phase. 129<br />

Products <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oz<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> aromatic am<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> diam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>clude oximes,<br />

hydroxylam<strong>in</strong>es, nitroso <strong>and</strong> nitro compounds. 130-133<br />

Service requirement placed <strong>on</strong> many f<strong>in</strong>ished rubber products<br />

dem<strong>and</strong> improved polymer stabilizati<strong>on</strong>. The effectiveness <strong>of</strong> antioxidants<br />

depends <strong>on</strong> two factors.<br />

(a) Intr<strong>in</strong>sic activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> antioxidant<br />

This is <strong>the</strong> fundamental ability <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> antioxidant <strong>and</strong> its<br />

transformati<strong>on</strong> products to <strong>in</strong>terfere with <strong>and</strong> retard <strong>the</strong> radical cha<strong>in</strong><br />

oxidati<strong>on</strong> process, which <strong>in</strong> turn depend <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemical structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

antioxidant.<br />

(b) Permanence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> antioxidant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> polymer<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> antioxidant <strong>in</strong> a polymer decreases dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g term <strong>use</strong>, as a c<strong>on</strong>sequence <strong>of</strong> two process (1) chemical loss <strong>of</strong><br />

antioxidant, (2) physical loss <strong>of</strong> antioxidant from <strong>the</strong> polymer. 134-138<br />

1.5 Scope <strong>and</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> this study has been to develop more<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment friendly, coloured <strong>and</strong> cheaper rubber products: (i) by reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> <strong>oxide</strong> <strong>and</strong> (ii) by mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>silica</strong> easier.<br />

Release <strong>of</strong> <strong>z<strong>in</strong>c</strong> from rubber products occurs dur<strong>in</strong>g disposal, recycl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

also dur<strong>in</strong>g service life. In view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upcom<strong>in</strong>g legislati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> ecolabell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

requirements for vehicle tyres, for <strong>in</strong>stance, it can be stated that it is desirable<br />

to keep <strong>the</strong> ZnO c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>in</strong> rubber compounds as low as possible, not <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

from envir<strong>on</strong>mental c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s but also from ec<strong>on</strong>omical reas<strong>on</strong>s. The
