Diethylene glycol was supplied by S.D f<strong>in</strong>e chemicals Ltd, Mumbai.<br />

a) Vulkanox HS<br />

Commercial antioxidant vulkanox HS (1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl<br />

qu<strong>in</strong>ol<strong>in</strong>e, polymerized) was obta<strong>in</strong>ed from Bayer India Ltd. It had a specific<br />

gravity <strong>of</strong> 1.1.<br />

b) Para-phenylenediam<strong>in</strong>e derivatives<br />

IPPD [N-isopropyl-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediam<strong>in</strong>e], 6PPD [N-(1,3-<br />

dimethyl buty1)–N′-pheny1-p-phenylenediam<strong>in</strong>e], DPPD [N,N′-diphenyl-p-<br />

phenylenediam<strong>in</strong>e] were obta<strong>in</strong>ed from NOCIL Ltd. Thane, India.<br />

Sulphur (cross l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g agent)<br />

Sulphur was supplied by M/S St<strong>and</strong>ard chemicals Co Pvt. Ltd,<br />

Madras. It had <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g specificati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Specific gravity (g/cm 3) 2.05<br />

Ash (%) 0.10<br />

Solubility <strong>in</strong> CS2 (% by mass) 98<br />

2.2 Experimental<br />

2.2.1 Vulcanizati<strong>on</strong><br />

Mix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> homogenizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> a mix<strong>in</strong>g mill<br />

Mixes were prepared <strong>on</strong> a laboratory size two roll mix<strong>in</strong>g mill (6 x 12<br />

<strong>in</strong>ch) as per ASTM D 3182–89. The mix<strong>in</strong>g was carried out at a fricti<strong>on</strong> ratio <strong>of</strong><br />

1:1.25. The mill open<strong>in</strong>g was set at 0.2 mm <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> elastomer was passed<br />

through <strong>the</strong> rolls twice without b<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This was <strong>the</strong>n b<strong>and</strong>ed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> slow<br />
