roll with mill open<strong>in</strong>g at 1.4 mm <strong>and</strong> was <strong>in</strong>creased to 1.9 mm as <strong>the</strong> b<strong>and</strong><br />

became smooth. The temperature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rolls was ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed at 70±5 °C. The<br />

compound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>gredients were added as per procedure given <strong>in</strong> ASTM D<br />

3184–89 <strong>and</strong> ASTM D 3182–89 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g order: activator, filler,<br />

accelerator <strong>and</strong> cur<strong>in</strong>g agents. Before <strong>the</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> accelerator <strong>and</strong> sulphur,<br />

<strong>the</strong> batch was thoroughly cooled.<br />

After mix<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients, homogenizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> compound<br />

was carried out by pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rolled stock end wise six times at a mill<br />

open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 0.8 mm. The mill was opened to give a m<strong>in</strong>imum stock thickness<br />

<strong>of</strong> 6 mm <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> stock was passed through <strong>the</strong> rolls four times fold<strong>in</strong>g it back<br />

<strong>on</strong> itself each time.<br />

Mix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> compounds us<strong>in</strong>g brabender plasticorder<br />

Brabender plasticorder has been widely <strong>use</strong>d for measur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

processability <strong>of</strong> polymer. The heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> torque rheometer is a jacketed<br />

mix<strong>in</strong>g chamber whose volume is approximately 40 cc for <strong>the</strong> model <strong>use</strong>d (PL<br />

3S). Mix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> shear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mix<strong>in</strong>g chamber is d<strong>on</strong>e by<br />

horiz<strong>on</strong>tal rotors with protrusi<strong>on</strong>s. The resistance put up by <strong>the</strong> test material<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st rotat<strong>in</strong>g rotors <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mix<strong>in</strong>g chamber is <strong>in</strong>dicated with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> a<br />

dynamometer balance. The dynamometer is attached to a mechanical<br />

measur<strong>in</strong>g system, which records <strong>the</strong> torque. A dc thyrister c<strong>on</strong>trolled drive<br />

is <strong>use</strong>d for speed c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rotors (0 to 150 rpm). The temperature can be<br />

varied up to 300°C. A <strong>the</strong>rmocouple with a recorder is <strong>use</strong>d for temperature<br />

measurements. Different type <strong>of</strong> rotors can be employed depend<strong>in</strong>g up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> polymer <strong>use</strong>d. The rotors can be easily mounted us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

simple fasten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> coupl<strong>in</strong>g system. Mix<strong>in</strong>g time <strong>and</strong> temperature were<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trolled dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> process.
