Portl<strong>and</strong> cement<br />

20<br />

The beneficial effects <strong>of</strong> ZnO additi<strong>on</strong>s to Portl<strong>and</strong> cement have l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

been known. They are retardati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> harden<strong>in</strong>g (to reduce <strong>the</strong> rate<br />

<strong>of</strong> heat evoluti<strong>on</strong>), improvement <strong>in</strong> whiteness <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al strength.<br />

1.4.2. Classificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> fillers<br />

Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> various compound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>gredients, fillers become <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> most important comp<strong>on</strong>ents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manufacture <strong>of</strong> rubber products, with<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d to rubber. Fillers are widely <strong>use</strong>d to enhance <strong>the</strong><br />

performance <strong>of</strong> rubbers <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r polymeric materials. In certa<strong>in</strong> cases <strong>the</strong>y<br />

lower <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al products. They <strong>in</strong>fluence almost all<br />

properties, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g density, hardness, tensile strength, impact strength,<br />

chemical resistance, heat distorti<strong>on</strong> temperature, processability <strong>and</strong> even <strong>the</strong><br />

appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al products.<br />

Filler may ei<strong>the</strong>r be active or <strong>in</strong>active accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> mutual<br />

<strong>in</strong>teracti<strong>on</strong> between filler <strong>and</strong> polymer. This classificati<strong>on</strong> is ra<strong>the</strong>r arbitrary<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce it is based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> difference <strong>in</strong> chemical compositi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> characteristics<br />

<strong>of</strong> filler-particle surfaces, particle shape, size <strong>and</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> surfaces by<br />

coupl<strong>in</strong>g agents. The filler activity is c<strong>on</strong>trolled by <strong>the</strong> mutual adhesi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> polymer <strong>and</strong> filler; it corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to <strong>the</strong> physicochemical character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

polymer-filler <strong>in</strong>terface, which determ<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> sorpti<strong>on</strong> process <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> solid surface as well as <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> polymer-filler b<strong>on</strong>ds. The results <strong>of</strong><br />

many studies describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> different aspects <strong>of</strong> filler-polymer <strong>in</strong>teracti<strong>on</strong> are<br />

available <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature. 37-38<br />

Today <strong>the</strong>re are hundreds <strong>of</strong> commercial fillers provid<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

performance range from n<strong>on</strong>-re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g to highly re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g; giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

rubber compounder a wide choice <strong>of</strong> cost benefit opti<strong>on</strong>. Fillers <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong><br />

rubber compounds are generally classified <strong>in</strong>to black <strong>and</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-black fillers.
