tragedy; at was an expiation for the sins of others.<br />

This is the tradition which Paul had received (above,<br />

g 57). This expiation was originally thought of in<br />

relation to the purlishment of sin : by virtue of it the<br />

sins whore penalty would otheri~ise have been visited<br />

upon the offender are remilled and he is cleared. From<br />
