In physics the Stoics returned to the crude pre-Socratic views, and erpecial!y to those of Heraclitus. They were strict n~aterinliarr. and conceived God, or earure, to be in essence a fiery process. In ethics, Zeno formulated the end of life as rb dpohoyolifiivwr ($", 'consistency '; but this war expandud by Clelnthes into 'life consistent with nature.' and by Chryeippus into 'lire according to our experience of what happens by nature.' Thus ethics was set on a bvrir oi theoretical knowlcdge-though the physical theory does not furnish any very obvious ethical guidance virtue alone war good, vice alone bad. Other thrngs were indifferent-eg., life and plearure, denrh and pain.
