Malta<br />

CHAPTER<br />

Relations <strong>between</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n state <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sovereign Military Order <strong>of</strong> Malta (Knights <strong>of</strong><br />

Malta) were first established in 1698, when Peter <strong>the</strong> Great’s ambassador Boris Petrovich<br />

Sheremetev was received with honour in Valletta. He received a diamond studded gold<br />

cross <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Order <strong>of</strong> St John, becoming <strong>the</strong> first <strong>Russia</strong>n knight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> order.<br />

The Maltese knights came <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>, where <strong>the</strong>y were granted l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> high<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice. The residence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> order was transferred <strong>to</strong> St. Petersburg where <strong>the</strong><br />

architect Giacomo Quarenghi built a Maltese chapel. Cooperation <strong>between</strong> St Petersburg<br />

<strong>and</strong> Malta is active in present times <strong>and</strong> in 2006 <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ric organ <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Maltese chapel in <strong>the</strong> Vorontsov Palace was res<strong>to</strong>red with sponsorship from a<br />

Malta-based hotel group.<br />

The <strong>Russia</strong>n Centre for Science <strong>and</strong> Culture (RCSC) was set up Malta in 1990 <strong>to</strong> promote<br />

<strong>cultural</strong>, scientific, educational, business, artistic <strong>and</strong> humanitarian contacts <strong>between</strong><br />

<strong>Russia</strong> <strong>and</strong> Malta. The RCSC is housed in a his<strong>to</strong>rical 16th Century building. The <strong>Russia</strong>n<br />

government has res<strong>to</strong>red <strong>and</strong> taken care <strong>of</strong> this his<strong>to</strong>rical monument in Valletta.<br />

The Centre has a reference <strong>and</strong> a lending library in English <strong>and</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n; a concert hall<br />

named after Piotr Tchaikovsky. The hall has seen many successful conferences, public<br />

lectures, talks, concerts, piano recitals, folk music groups <strong>and</strong> video sessions. There is<br />

a library with books, music <strong>and</strong> video from <strong>Russia</strong> as well as a <strong>Russia</strong>n language school<br />

licensed by <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> Culture in Malta.<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n Cultural Centre (1998).<br />
