The Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

CHAPTER<br />

The Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s has a specific <strong>cultural</strong> interest in <strong>Russia</strong>. This is connected with his<strong>to</strong>ric<br />

ties, mutual <strong>cultural</strong> heritage <strong>and</strong> contemporary exchange <strong>of</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> events. Peter <strong>the</strong><br />

Great visited Holl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> became particularly interested in Dutch art, h<strong>and</strong>icraft <strong>and</strong> museums.<br />

Amsterdam <strong>and</strong> its canals was his model for <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> St Petersburg.<br />

In 2003 <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s organised a large <strong>cultural</strong> festival with six hundred participants<br />

in St Petersburg <strong>to</strong> commemorate <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. Since <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

organises annual <strong>cultural</strong> festivals in various cities in <strong>Russia</strong>. Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg<br />

<strong>and</strong> Moscow are <strong>the</strong> target cities in that respect.<br />

The Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s Embassy has a special budget for <strong>the</strong> financing <strong>of</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> projects in<br />

<strong>Russia</strong>. These projects are carried out in close cooperation <strong>and</strong> preferably proposed by<br />

<strong>Russia</strong>n partners. Contemporary music, baroque music <strong>and</strong> jazz are some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disciplines<br />

that have received special attention. Also modern dance, architecture <strong>and</strong> design,<br />

film <strong>and</strong> pho<strong>to</strong>graphy are much in dem<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong>re is intensive cooperation <strong>between</strong> museums in both countries. In Amsterdam<br />

<strong>the</strong> museum ‘Hermitage on <strong>the</strong> Amstel’ opened in 2004 <strong>and</strong> shows different annual exhibitions<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Hermitage museum in St Petersburg. In <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> heritage<br />

research is being undertaken in a number <strong>of</strong> archives in <strong>Russia</strong> <strong>to</strong> trace ties with <strong>the</strong><br />

Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side, artists from <strong>Russia</strong> are well informed about <strong>the</strong> artistic scene in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> exhibitions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n art <strong>and</strong> culture regularly take place in <strong>the</strong><br />

Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Some fifty <strong>cultural</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s events are organised in <strong>Russia</strong> each year, <strong>of</strong>ten in combination<br />

with master classes <strong>and</strong> educational links. Since 1992 <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s has<br />

been implementing an educational cooperation programme with <strong>Russia</strong> that also has a<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> impact.<br />
