Chapter 3: European Union Member States<br />

The object can only be <strong>export</strong>ed out <strong>of</strong> Cyprus when you have obtained <strong>the</strong> relevant <strong>export</strong><br />

licence. The procedure takes one <strong>to</strong> three months, <strong>the</strong>refore you may have <strong>to</strong> leave<br />

<strong>the</strong> object in <strong>the</strong> country <strong>and</strong> arrange for transport afterwards.<br />

Is <strong>the</strong>re a fee for an <strong>export</strong> licence?<br />

Yes. Information on <strong>the</strong> processing fee is available from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Antiquities.<br />

What o<strong>the</strong>r paperwork do I need <strong>to</strong> <strong>export</strong> a <strong>cultural</strong> object?<br />

The <strong>export</strong> licence, <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>ms <strong>export</strong> declaration (SAD) is sufficient.<br />

All consignments declared for <strong>export</strong>s as <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>goods</strong> are subject <strong>to</strong> full documentary<br />

<strong>and</strong> physical checks. R<strong>and</strong>om checks in relation <strong>to</strong> <strong>export</strong>s in general are also carried out<br />

within <strong>the</strong> preventive measures undertaken by <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Cus<strong>to</strong>ms <strong>and</strong> Excise.<br />

What are <strong>the</strong> penalties if I do something wrong?<br />

In cases <strong>of</strong> illegal <strong>export</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>goods</strong>, Section 30 <strong>of</strong> Law No. 182(I) <strong>of</strong> 2002 provides<br />

for a fine not exceeding 2,000 Cyprus Pounds <strong>and</strong>/or imprisonment for a term <strong>of</strong> up <strong>to</strong><br />

three years. Similar sanctions are foreseen under <strong>the</strong> Cus<strong>to</strong>ms Code.<br />

What are <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> service I can expect <strong>to</strong> receive?<br />

The Cyprus Cus<strong>to</strong>ms <strong>and</strong> Excise Department has prepared a <strong>guide</strong> on “The Export <strong>of</strong><br />

Cultural Goods” <strong>to</strong> be published on <strong>the</strong> Department’s Website.<br />
