CHAPTER<br />

Cultural cooperation <strong>between</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK <strong>and</strong> <strong>Russia</strong> has a long his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> continues <strong>to</strong><br />

play an <strong>import</strong>ant role in <strong>the</strong> relationship <strong>between</strong> our two countries. Through <strong>the</strong> British<br />

<strong>to</strong> bringing <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russia</strong> high-quality, innovative arts events which reflect both contemporary<br />

In recent years <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n <strong>cultural</strong> events in <strong>the</strong> UK has increased dramatically,<br />

reflecting a growing interest among UK residents in <strong>Russia</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n culture. The<br />

British Council plans <strong>to</strong> capitalise on this by organising, in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n<br />

Ministry <strong>of</strong> Culture, a Year <strong>of</strong> UK in <strong>Russia</strong> in 2010 <strong>and</strong> a Year <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russia</strong> in UK in 2011.<br />

In December 2006, <strong>to</strong> celebrate <strong>the</strong> 150th anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tretyakov Gallery, <strong>the</strong> British<br />

Council organised a major exhibition <strong>of</strong> James McNeill Whistler, <strong>the</strong> first time such a comprehensive<br />

survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artist’s work has been seen in <strong>Russia</strong>. Including loans from major museums<br />

in <strong>the</strong> UK <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA, this exhibition demonstrated both <strong>the</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> for such shows in<br />

<strong>Russia</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> willingness <strong>of</strong> western institutions <strong>to</strong> lend major works <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russia</strong>n museums.<br />
