9) describe each action on a separate line;<br />

10) start each line with an action verb if possible;<br />

11) use the terms commonly used in the facility/organization/profession;<br />

12) include steps to verify that the response has been successfully completed;<br />

13) clearly indicate decision points with what to do if it is a “ yes” or “no”;<br />

14) provide precautions or risks clearly highlighted with words such as “Attention” or ”Caution”; and<br />

15) as much as possible, be designed to respond to readily available information (observable) such as<br />

readings and units on the instruments where the procedure will be performed.<br />

Appendix 12 provides an outline for procedures.<br />

Ensure that procedures and associated information, reference materials, tools, protective equipment and<br />

documents required to perform a function are available at the location where the function is to be carried<br />

out.<br />

B4.10 Ensure that procedures, analytical tools and computer programs used in performing functions to<br />

meet the requirements for emergency response are tested under simulated conditions and validated prior to<br />

use (5.22).<br />

Before use procedures should be:<br />

1) co-ordinated with all appropriate organizations or departments;<br />

2) independently reviewed and integrated into the training programmes;<br />

3) field tested under conditions that maximize realism; and<br />

4) integrated into a QA programme to ensure that the procedures remain up to date (see Element B7.1).<br />
