4. The essential character of the<br />

Omniscience in regard of the Path and of the Bodhisattva<br />

who becomes possessed of it,—t he non-rejection<br />

of the Phenomenal World (in order<br />

to help the living beings).<br />

[Don. 8a. 2.] hkhor-ba m.i~hdor~bahi ran~bzin.<br />

(The Bodhisattva) who has made the Mental Effort<br />

for Enlightenment, in acting for the weal of the living<br />

beings, as long as they abide in the Phenomenal World,<br />

does not completely reject all the worldly elements, as<br />

desires etc. Such is his essential nature. 1<br />

5. The action of assembling one's adherents,<br />

etc.<br />

[Don. 8a. 2-3.] gzan-hkhor-du-sdud-pa-sogs-l^yi byedlas.<br />

He who is possessed of such an essential nature (as<br />

has just been demonstrated), without realizing the<br />

ultimate limits 2 makes manifest his wisdom and skill in<br />

action. By means of these, by granting gifts and the<br />

like, 3 he brings together, conduces (to the right path),<br />

the zeal (of the Hinayanists and to induce them ti the Great<br />

Enlightenment, as well as to keep together those who have entered<br />

the Mahayana and prevent their relapse into the Small Vehicle<br />

(Abhis. aloka, MS. 11 sqq.) , In connection with this subject, the<br />

Commentaries give us detailed discussions concerning the theory of<br />

the Unique Vehicle (ek.a-yana). Cf. Appendix and "Doclr. of<br />

of others (artha-carya — don-spyod-pa) and common interest (samanaarthGta~dontnthun-pa).<br />

and leads to Deliverance the living beings who were not<br />

assembled together, who were deprived of the due guidance,<br />

and who had no means of becoming delivered.<br />

Limits : In general, the auxiliary attributes exist<br />

already with an individual who has not yet entered the<br />

Path, and continue to be his essential properties till the<br />

attainment of the Stage of the Buddha.<br />
