COOLING AND LUBRICATION SYSTEM 7-9THERMOSTATREMOVAL• Drain engine coolant. (2-17)• Lift and support the fuel tank. (5-3)• Place a rag under the thermostat cover.• Remove the thermostat cover 1.• Remove the thermostat 2.INSPECTIONInspect the thermostat pellet for signs of cracking.Test the thermostat at the bench for control action, in the followingmanner.• Pass a string 1 between flange 2 of thermostat, as shown.• Immerse the thermostat in the water contained in a beaker, asshown in the illustration. Note that the immersed thermostat isin suspension. Heat the water 3 by placing the beaker on astove 4 and observe the rising temperature on a thermometer5.• Read the thermometer just when opening the thermostat. Thisreading, which is the temperature level at which the thermostatvalve begins to open, should satisfy the standard value. Thermostat valve opening temperatureStandard: Approx. 82 °C
7-10 COOLING AND LUBRICATION SYSTEM• Keep on heating the water to raise its temperature.• Just when the water temperature reaches specified value, thethermostat valve should have lifted by at least 8 mm. Thermostat valve lift AStandard: 8.0 mm and over at 95 °C• A thermostat failing to satisfy either of the two requirements(start-to-open temperature and valve lift) must be replaced.INSTALLATION• Install the thermostat.NOTE:The jiggle valve A of the thermostat faces upside.• Install the thermostat cover 1.• Tighten the thermostat cover bolts to the specified torque. Thermostat cover bolt: 10 N·m (1.0 kgf-m)• Pour engine coolant and bleed air from the cooling circuit.(2-17 and -18)
