3-38 ENGINE• Install the valve spring with the small-pitch portion A facingcylinder head.B Large-pitch portionC UPWARDD Paint• Put on the valve spring retainer 2, and using the special tool3, press down the spring, fit the cotter halves 4 to the stemend, and release the lifter to allow the cotter halves to wedgein between retainer and stem. 09916-14510: Valve lifter09916-14530: Valve lifter attachment09916-84511: Tweezers09919-28610: Sleeve protector• Be sure that the rounded lip E of the cotter fits snugly into thegroove F in the stem end.• Install the other valves and springs in the same manner asdescribed previously.Be sure to restore each spring and valve to their originalpositions.Be careful not to damage the valve and valve stemwhen handling it.2 Valve spring retainer4 Cotter• Install the tappet shims and the tappets to their original positions.NOTE:* Apply engine oil to the stem end, shim and tappet before fittingthem.* When seating the tappet shim, be sure the figure printed surfacefaces the tappet.
