78A candidate's selection <strong>of</strong> major(s), minor(s) and <strong>of</strong> cross-departmental course combinations shall bemade only with the approval <strong>of</strong> the Heads <strong>of</strong> the Departments/Centre/School concerned, and acandidate's choice shall normally be confined to those combinations which are possible under thepublished timetable. Candidates shall not be permitted to take, within their normal study load <strong>of</strong> 120credits, more than 30 credits outside the Faculty or more than 12 credits from the Department <strong>of</strong> SocialWork and Social Administration, except that a candidate taking a major in the Department <strong>of</strong>Philosophy or in one <strong>of</strong> the following majors shall be permitted to take up to 48 credits from thedepartments/school/programme listed in Regulation A9(c)(ii) above: American Studies, History,Linguistics and Philosophy, or Politics and Philosophy.Candidates who wish to exceed the normal load <strong>of</strong> 60 credits in each academic year shall be allowed totake up to 6 additional credits from the departments/school/programme listed in Regulation A9(b) and(c)(ii) above in each <strong>of</strong> second and third academic years <strong>of</strong> the <strong>BA</strong> curriculum.Assessment and gradesA 12 Candidates shall be assessed for each <strong>of</strong> the courses for which they have registered, andassessment may be conducted in any combination <strong>of</strong>: coursework, written examinations or tests,continuous assessment <strong>of</strong> class performance, field work, research or project reports, or in any othermanner as specified in the syllabuses. Grades shall be awarded in accordance with UG 5 <strong>of</strong> theRegulations for First Degree Curricula.A 13 Written examinations or tests shall normally be held at the end <strong>of</strong> the semester in which it istaught unless otherwise provided for in the syllabuses. Candidates may be required to sit writtenexaminations or tests for more than one course on any particular date.A 14 Courses in which a candidate is given an F grade shall be recorded on the transcript, togetherwith the new grade obtained by the candidate repeating the failed course under Regulation A16(a). Anyfailed grade(s) shall be included in calculating the Semester GPA and shall be taken into account for thepurpose <strong>of</strong> honours classification, except as provided for under Regulation A16(b).A 15 Except as provided for under Regulation A16(b) below, candidates shall not be permitted torepeat a course for which they have received a D grade or above for upgrading purposes.A 16(a) Candidates in their first or second academic year who have failed in not more than 18credits <strong>of</strong> courses shall be required in the subsequent academic year to repeat the failedcourses, or select new courses which bear the same number <strong>of</strong> credits and are listed asbeing in same academic year <strong>of</strong> study as the failed courses, in addition to the coursesthat they are required to take that academic year, in the manner specified in RegulationA14 above.(b) A candidate in any academic year <strong>of</strong> study who has failed in more than 18 credits but innot more than 36 credits shall be required to repeat an academic year <strong>of</strong> study in themanner specified by the Board <strong>of</strong> the Faculty. Candidates who are required to repeat anacademic year <strong>of</strong> study may re-take all or part <strong>of</strong> the courses they have already passedor may select new courses, and in such an event the grades obtained in the repeatingacademic year shall replace those from the previous academic year for the purpose <strong>of</strong>honours classification, but grades obtained in both academic years shall be recorded onthe transcript <strong>of</strong> the candidate.(c) Candidates who are permitted to repeat the academic year under the provisions <strong>of</strong>A16(b) and whose progress in the repeated academic year is unsatisfactory shall berequired to discontinue their studies in the Faculty.(d) Candidates in their first or second academic year <strong>of</strong> study who have failed in more than36 credits shall be required to discontinue their studies in the Faculty.
