190GEOG2077.China: environment and sustainable development * (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)Due to its geographic characteristics and its large population size, China is prone to natural resourcesdegradation. Environmental problems have been accelerated by the rapid economic growth <strong>of</strong> recentyears, high intensity <strong>of</strong> energy use, particularly in the industrial sector, and economic and pricingpolicies that did not take into account the intrinsic market value <strong>of</strong> the resources. <strong>The</strong>se factors combineto cause over exploitation <strong>of</strong> natural resources. This course comprises three main sections. Followingthe introduction, Section I provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the state <strong>of</strong> the natural environment <strong>of</strong> the country.Section II focuses on the institution, legislative and administrative framework for environmentprotection and nature conservation. Finally, Section III discusses the government's strategy for theenvironment and sustainable development as spelled out in recent Five-Year plans and China's Agenda21.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.GEOG2078.Urban geography I: growth, function and pattern <strong>of</strong> cities (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This is one <strong>of</strong> the two basic courses on urban geography. It covers basic topics <strong>of</strong> the forces and patterns<strong>of</strong> urbanization, central place theories, functions <strong>of</strong> cities, rank size rule, primacy and urban systems,and new urbanization features such as the world city and Extended Metropolitan Regions. It is basic tothe understanding <strong>of</strong> urban and regional development issues and problems.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.GEOG2079.Urban geography II: city structure and urban land use models (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This is one <strong>of</strong> the two basic courses on urban geography. It deals with conventional urban land usemodels and the cultural and modern forces that shape the urban internal structures <strong>of</strong> different regions <strong>of</strong>today. It covers the conventional urban land use models, social areas, CBD, urban industrial location,urban renewal and the rural-urban fringe, urban structures <strong>of</strong> colonial cities, African cities, Islamiccities, Latin American cities, Chinese and Soviet cities, as well as the new city in the Information Age.<strong>The</strong> course will be useful for urban administration, planning and marketing.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the second semester.* = Course to be <strong>of</strong>fered in biennial even year, i.e. in 2002-03, 2004-05 and so on.
