Globalization and the information society: myths, facts and emerging patterns (6credits)This course will draw upon the most recent social research and undertake a critical examination <strong>of</strong> theideas <strong>of</strong> globalization and information society. Three main areas will be covered: the nature <strong>of</strong> theknowledge-based informational economy, the ideas <strong>of</strong> risk, trust, and other economic-sociologicalaspects <strong>of</strong> e-business, and the transformations <strong>of</strong> work and non-work relationships as well as ourexperiences <strong>of</strong> time and space in the information age.Assessment: 100% coursework.327SOCI0065.Understanding media studies (6 credits)This course provides an analysis <strong>of</strong> the nature, development and impact <strong>of</strong> communication media insociety. It introduces students to the approaches for understanding the role <strong>of</strong> mass media in society. Italso examines a number <strong>of</strong> substantive issues concerning the actual functioning <strong>of</strong> moderncommunication media. Topics covered will include: changing technologies <strong>of</strong> communication, theideology, ownership and control <strong>of</strong> modern media, ideals and practices <strong>of</strong> journalism, the uniqueness <strong>of</strong>different media forms like television, cinema, print and the internet, the political impact <strong>of</strong> media, thesocial impact <strong>of</strong> new communication technologies, the regulation <strong>of</strong> and access to broadcasting, and theglobalization <strong>of</strong> communication media.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.SOCI0066.<strong>The</strong> Asian economic miracles and beyond (6 credits)This course will examine the Asian economic miracles from the economic, social, and political angles.First, it will analyze the making <strong>of</strong> the economic miracles by exploring the roles <strong>of</strong> government policies,family and related social institutions, as well as the global political-economic forces. <strong>The</strong> relationshipsbetween these factors and the 1997 financial crisis will also be examined. Second, the course will lookat the impacts <strong>of</strong> economic development on alleviating income and other forms <strong>of</strong> social-culturalinequality. Finally, it will address the complex interactions between economic development andpolitical democratization. <strong>The</strong> course will focus on <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan,but it will bring in the experiences <strong>of</strong> the Mainland China, Japan and other Southeast Asian countrieswhere appropriate.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.STATISTICS AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Statistics and Actuarial Science <strong>of</strong>fers four basic courses for students who have notstudied Statistics before. One, STAT1003, is for students with a good mathematics background. <strong>The</strong>others, STAT1001, STAT1009 and STAT0113, are designed for students without a mathematicsbackground. All four courses are concerned with the basic ideas, methods and applications <strong>of</strong> statisticalanalysis.Students wishing to acquire a deeper knowledge <strong>of</strong> Statistics may take other courses subject to the limitsimposed by Regulation A11(c) <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Arts</strong> Faculty.<strong>The</strong> final grading in all courses will be assessed by a combination <strong>of</strong> examination and coursework. <strong>The</strong>proportion is 75:25, except when another ratio is specifically mentioned in the course description.
