168FINE2034.<strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> art workshop (6 credits)This course will introduce <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> art and related aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> visual culture. It will betaught in a workshop format, and will provide the opportunity for students to develop skills in artcriticism as well as an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> art history.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: At least one Fine <strong>Arts</strong> course.FINE2035.Photography and the nineteenth century (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course studies the history <strong>of</strong> photography in the nineteenth century: its invention and technologicalevolution, its various early practices, and its interactions with other cultural practices. In discussingthese topics it also investigates the social, cultural and ideological problems to which the medium gaverise especially in the Western world and the era <strong>of</strong> modernity. Some introductory practical lessons andfield trips are included so that students can have a better understanding <strong>of</strong> the actual photographicprocess.Assessment: 100% coursework.FINE2036.Photography in the twentieth century (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course investigates the history <strong>of</strong> photography in the twentieth century. It charts how earlierphotographic practices evolved and were transformed in the new era, and traces the workings <strong>of</strong> newpractices such as photojournalism and fashion photography. As modernism and avant-gardism havepervaded twentieth century culture and arts, this course also focuses on how photography responded tothese tendencies in different countries. Finally, it considers the medium's role in the age <strong>of</strong> globalculture and digital imaging.Prerequisite: FINE2035.Assessment: 100% coursework.FINE2037.Chinese material culture studies (6 credits)This course will be a chronological survey <strong>of</strong> Chinese material culture from the Neolithic period to theQing dynasty. <strong>The</strong> history and wealth <strong>of</strong> Chinese material culture, continuing to the present day,suggests a long tradition <strong>of</strong> art producing. Through the study <strong>of</strong> bronze and carvings in jade, stone,wood, lacquer as well as bamboo, students will explore the social, historical and philosophicalcircumstances surrounding art production. This will show how art was important largely because <strong>of</strong> itslong history and acceptance as a traditional means <strong>of</strong> expression. Ceramics, taught as an individualsubject, will not be included in this course.Assessment: 100% coursework.FINE2038.Special studies in the history <strong>of</strong> art II (6 credits)This rubric covers courses that may be <strong>of</strong>fered from time to time. <strong>The</strong> details <strong>of</strong> the course when <strong>of</strong>feredwill be published in the Department brochure and other media.Assessment: 100% coursework.
