Following an overview <strong>of</strong> its European and African roots and the development <strong>of</strong> Americanmusic up to World War I, intensive consideration will be given to jazz, rock, blues, musicals, classicaland avant-garde musics. This course is available to all students.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).MUSI2033. II/III.21 Music and culture in Bali: an overseas fieldtrip (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course focuses on the study <strong>of</strong> gamelan music and its cultural context over a two week field trip inBali. Students will spend one week in intensive workshops at the Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia (STSI),the principal institution for the Indonesian performing arts in Bali, and another week participating inand observing gamelan performance in a traditional Balinese community. <strong>The</strong> course is open to studentswho have completed one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: (i) Ensemble Music Performance (gamelancomponent), (ii) <strong>University</strong> Gamelan 1, or (iii) <strong>University</strong> Gamelan 2. Students will be required toproduce a field work report.Assessment will be based on 100% field report.MUSI2034. II/III.22 American film music (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course is about music and sound in American films. In this course, you will learn some basic musicterms, how film composers work, what music does in film, and about film audio technology. Thiscourse is for almost anyone. <strong>The</strong>re are no prerequisites, i.e., no previous musical knowledge required.However, you should really love films and music. <strong>The</strong>re will be many viewing and listeningassignments.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (60%) and an examination (40%).MUSI3009. III.1 Western music performance 2 (6 credits)Students prepare a recital <strong>of</strong> 40 minutes under the supervision <strong>of</strong> an instrumental teacher approved bythe Department. At least one piece must be performed on a period instrument (if appropriate), or mustuse period or advanced twentieth-century techniques. Places in this course are limited and admission isby audition. Except with the permission <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department, Western Music Performance 2 isavailable only to students taking a major in music.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI3010. III.2 Western music performance practice 2 (6 credits)This course is concerned with matters concerning performance theory, including historical performancepractice and twentieth century techniques, at a more advanced level than Western Music PerformancePractice 1.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).
