323SOCI0039.Social movements (6 credits)This course examines the patterns and processes <strong>of</strong> different types <strong>of</strong> social and revolutionarymovements.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.Prerequisite: None, but SOCI0027 recommended.SOCI0041.Social problems (6 credits)This course is designed to introduce students to a number <strong>of</strong> contemporary social problems, socialissues, and social concerns. Special emphasis is given to the nature <strong>of</strong> social problems in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.SOCI0042.Social research methods (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> aims <strong>of</strong> this course are to introduce the basic principles and procedures which form the foundation<strong>of</strong> social research, to review the main types <strong>of</strong> research designs and methods <strong>of</strong> data collection used insocial research, and to provide a set <strong>of</strong> criteria for analysing and evaluating the products <strong>of</strong> socialresearch. <strong>The</strong> types <strong>of</strong> research covered will include participant observation, experimental design,survey methods and documentary analysis. Ethical and political issues in social research will also bediscussed.SOCI0043.Sociology <strong>of</strong> contemporary culture (6 credits)This course aims to survey a number <strong>of</strong> theoretical and methodological approaches to the study <strong>of</strong>contemporary cultural life. Topics covered will include the production and consumption <strong>of</strong> masscommunication products (TV, films, advertisements, fiction, pop music), spectator sports, leisurepatterns and subcultural lifestyles.SOCI0044.Sociology <strong>of</strong> economic life (6 credits)This course deals with the relations between the economic and non-economic aspects <strong>of</strong> social life.Economic attitudes such as achievement motivations and work ethics, economic processes such asinnovation and the establishment <strong>of</strong> business trust, economic roles such as entrepreneurs and managers,and economic organizations such as family firms and corporations will be examined in theirsociocultural contexts.SOCI0045.Sociology <strong>of</strong> human psychology (6 credits)This course examines how individuals are connected to society from the perspectives <strong>of</strong>micro-sociology and sociological psychology. It looks at issues such as the ways in which individualsconstruct and manage a sense <strong>of</strong> self and identity in different settings and environments, how thisidentity is constantly reshaped during interaction with others, and the politics <strong>of</strong> social reality.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.
