143ENGL1008.Introduction to English Studies II (9 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course continues to introduce students to English literature and linguistics.Introduction to English Studies I (ENGL1007) is Prerequisite for this course for <strong>BA</strong> students.First Year ExaminationsFirst year English courses will each be examined by a two-hour written paper.First Year Coursework AssessmentCoursework assessment marks are based on tutorial assignments and class performance. <strong>The</strong> finalgrades for the department's first year courses are based on the student's performance in the writtenexamination (60%) and in coursework (40%).Second and Third YearAll courses beyond the first year may be taken in either the second or third year, unless otherwiseindicated. <strong>The</strong>se courses consist <strong>of</strong>: (a) English, American, and postcolonial writing, includingindividual authors and genres, as well as literary and cultural topics; (b) English language studies andlinguistics, including the linguistic analysis <strong>of</strong> English, sociolinguistics, the history <strong>of</strong> linguistics,critical linguistics, and the politics <strong>of</strong> language; and (c) the English language at work in a range <strong>of</strong>contexts and genres, including creative writing and drama.<strong>The</strong> Department also <strong>of</strong>fers a tutorial course, Advanced Topics in English Studies (ENGL3032). This isa 12-credit course, which allows students to follow a programme designed to suit their individualinterests. <strong>The</strong>re are no formal lectures and students are assessed on the basis <strong>of</strong> their written work.Admission to this course is subject to satisfactory examination results and tutors' recommendations.Second- and Third-Year ExaminationsModes <strong>of</strong> assessment vary from course to course. Please check the course description for details <strong>of</strong> howeach course is assessed.If staffing arrangements permit, the following second- and third-year courses will be <strong>of</strong>fered:ENGL2001.English sounds (6 credits)Introduction to English phonetics and phonology; systems <strong>of</strong> description and transcription; Englishaccents and variation; the aesthetics <strong>of</strong> sounds.Assessment will be by 100% coursework.ENGL2002.Language in society (6 credits)This course will provide an introduction to the study <strong>of</strong> 'sociolinguistics', which deals with therelationship between language and society. Topics will vary, but may include the following:multilingualism, language varieties, language planning, language change, English in contact with otherlanguages.Assessment will be by 100% coursework.
