294Senior level coursesStudents taking the equivalent <strong>of</strong> eight 6-credit courses in Philosophy or American Studies may selectup to eight courses in PPA, subject to the approval <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department and the completion <strong>of</strong> thespecified prerequisites. All other students may select up to five courses, again subject to the approval <strong>of</strong>the Head <strong>of</strong> Department and the completion <strong>of</strong> specified prerequisites.Not all the courses listed will necessarily be <strong>of</strong>fered every year. Subject to availability, all courses maybe taken in either year, except where a prerequisite is specified which must be taken in the second year.One two-hour written paper will be set for each course in the Examination. Courses will be examined atthe end <strong>of</strong> the semester in which they are taken.Coursework will be based on a candidate's tutorial and seminar papers and performance in any classtests. Students are expected to participate fully in class discussions and this will also be taken intoaccount. <strong>The</strong> final grading for each course will be determined by performance in the examination andan assessment <strong>of</strong> coursework in the proportion 60:40.SyllabusesJunior Level CoursesPOLI1002.Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> public administration (6 credits)This is a basic course in Public Administration. It seeks to introduce students to fundamental conceptsand approaches to the subject. <strong>The</strong> three main areas <strong>of</strong> concern are: (1) the development <strong>of</strong> thediscipline over the years; (2) the identification <strong>of</strong> the critical issues and problems related to modernpublic administration; and (3) the relationship between public administration and politics. In exploringthese questions, special emphasis will be placed on the situation in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.POLI1003.Making sense <strong>of</strong> politics (6 credits)This is a foundation course aimed at equipping students with the basic tools and concepts to make sense <strong>of</strong>the political world. Current issues will be discussed with the help <strong>of</strong> newspaper clippings and videoexcerpts. No prior knowledge <strong>of</strong> Government and Public Affairs (GPA) is needed.Senior Level CoursesPOLI0001.A special topic in political science (6 credits)This unit is <strong>of</strong>fered from time to time. Students should consult the Department on the content <strong>of</strong> the uniton <strong>of</strong>fer.POLI0002.A special topic in political theory (6 credits)Each year (if possible) a political theory unit will be <strong>of</strong>fered under this heading. <strong>The</strong> topic chosen willdepend upon the interests <strong>of</strong> staff and students. Students should consult the department on the content<strong>of</strong> the course on <strong>of</strong>fer.
