A music and/or writing background is helpful, but is notnecessary.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).MUSI2015. II/III.11 Popular music: from Cantopop to techno (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course covers popular music ranging from the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>'s Cantopop (e.g., Sam Hui,Aaron Kwok, Faye Wong) to the latest trends in the popular music market worldwide. <strong>The</strong> subjectmatter <strong>of</strong> this course is how popular music is defined, produced, disseminated and consumed acrossdifferent cultures <strong>of</strong> the world. Classes are not arranged chronologically to provide a historical survey,nor are all areas <strong>of</strong> the world covered. However, themes and concepts that can be applied to the seriousstudy <strong>of</strong> all popular musics (and perhaps even more) will be discussed. Students will learn the basiccritical tools to examine popular musics <strong>of</strong> the world from a scholarly perspective.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI2016. II/III.12 Music <strong>of</strong> contemporary <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course aims to promote an understanding <strong>of</strong> the various styles <strong>of</strong> music found in contemporary<strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. Areas to be covered include: commercial music, media and film music, musicals,traditional Chinese music, Western concert music, experimental music and Muzak. This course is opento all students.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI2017. II/III.13 Love, sex and death in music <strong>of</strong> the modern world (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course examines the expression <strong>of</strong> feelings, situations and stories that focus on passion, romance,sexuality, tragedy, and death in musical works. We shall consider both narrative and technical ways inwhich these expressions can be conveyed and their resultant power and meaning. <strong>The</strong> course considerspopular and art musics <strong>of</strong> the twentieth-century, music from the West and from other parts <strong>of</strong> the world,and music from both stage and concert genres.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).MUSI2020.
