Students are expected to have some previous experience in filmappreciation, aesthetics or history, and a basic knowledge <strong>of</strong> the grammar <strong>of</strong> the film medium.Assessment: 100% coursework.JMSC0019.Media law and ethics (6 credits)An overview <strong>of</strong> problems and issues relating to media laws and ethical considerations that affectjournalism and journalists.Assessment: 100% coursework.JMSC0025.Journalism traditions (6 credits)Comparative studies <strong>of</strong> the evolution <strong>of</strong> modern mass media, including newspapers, magazines, radio,and television, with special focus on Greater China and Asia.Assessment: 100% coursework.JMSC0027.<strong>The</strong> press, politics and government (6 credits).Analysis <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> mass media and other channels <strong>of</strong> communication in local and internationalpolitical processes.Assessment: 100% coursework.LANGUAGE CENTRE<strong>The</strong> Language Centre, through its French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Thaisections, provides <strong>BA</strong> degree courses in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish andThai for the <strong>Arts</strong> Faculty, as well as some certificate and voluntary courses available to students <strong>of</strong> allFaculties. <strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> places in each group is limited in order to ensure an appropriate environmentfor language learning.Major in FrenchStudents enrolled in French courses in their first year may choose to major in French in their second andthird years. <strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> the programme is to bring participants to a high level <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in thelanguage as well as to provide them with a sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> French society and culture.In order to declare a major in French, applicants must initially complete two foundation courses in theirfirst year (French Language I.1 and French Language I.2, first and second semesters, 18 credits in all)and achieve Grade C minimum in these courses. In addition, applicants will normally be required totake part in an intensive course <strong>of</strong>fered by the Centre at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester (usually in June).
