II.6 Orchestral studies and techniques 2 (for students in their secondyear <strong>of</strong> study) (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)Students participate in weekly rehearsals and performances with the <strong>University</strong>'s orchestra over twosemesters. Besides musical skills, this course focuses on teamwork, discipline and creativity. To gainadmission to the course, students must have reached the standard <strong>of</strong> ABRSM Grade 6 or the equivalenton one <strong>of</strong> the following: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin,viola, cello or double bass and must pass an audition. Orchestral Studies and Techniques 1 is not aprerequisite.Assessment will be based on participation and a practical examination.265MUSI2025. II/III.1 Analysis <strong>of</strong> Western art music II (6 credits)This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Analysis <strong>of</strong> Western Art Music I. It covers the theory and practice <strong>of</strong>Western art music from selected style periods. Emphasis is placed on typical harmonic and formalprocedures. Primary activities include in-depth analyses <strong>of</strong> selected works, drills on various harmonicsyntaxes, and short exercises in historical styles. Some computer-assisted self-study may be required.Assessment will be based on coursework (100%).MUSI2006.II/III.2 Analysis <strong>of</strong> orally transmitted musics (6 credits)This course will focus on the description, transcription and analysis <strong>of</strong> music that is essentially orallytransmitted. Issues such as 'emic' and 'etic' transcription, prescriptive and descriptive notation, andvarious methods and theories <strong>of</strong> analysis will be discussed. Music from a variety <strong>of</strong> cultures, includingmusical cultures <strong>of</strong> Asia, will be used as examples for study. Prerequisite: students must have completedIntroduction to Musics <strong>of</strong> the World before undertaking this course.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI2007.II/III.3 Western music history 1 (6 credits)This course traces the development <strong>of</strong> European music from its earliest beginnings in ancient Greeceand Rome, through the flowering <strong>of</strong> sacred and secular music in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance,to the integrated instrumental and vocal idioms <strong>of</strong> the Baroque. <strong>The</strong> course demands familiarity with anumber <strong>of</strong> representative works composed between ca. 800 AD and 1750. A strong focus is placed onthe analytical study <strong>of</strong> scores through listening and reading. In addition, we focus on the ways in whichmusic relates to the other arts and the social contexts in which music was created. Prerequisite: studentsmust have completed Introduction to Music in Western Culture before undertaking this course.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).MUSI2008.II/III.4 Western music history 2 (6 credits)This course will focus on the Western art music tradition from 1750 to the present, moving through theapparent stylistic perfection <strong>of</strong> the Classical era to the revolutions and restless variety <strong>of</strong> the Romanticera, and finally working through the complex experiments <strong>of</strong> modernist and postmodernist musics. Astandard repertoire will be introduced, and the student will be expected to become familiar with thescores, sounds and history <strong>of</strong> these periods. In addition, we focus on the ways in which music relates tothe other arts and the social contexts in which music was created. Prerequisite: students must havecompleted Western Music History 1 before undertaking this course.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).
