123CLIT2047.Cultures <strong>of</strong> the imagination: Disney and the world (6 credits)Disney is a worldwide phenomenon that is coming to <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. Although most people think <strong>of</strong> it asa premier example <strong>of</strong> 'globalization as Americanization', each <strong>of</strong> the sites has responded in differentways to 'Disneyfication'. <strong>The</strong> course will look at how Disney theme parks, cartoons, films, andcommercial products create new kinds <strong>of</strong> 'social imaginaries'. <strong>The</strong> course will focus on the <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>debates over the Disney project, and will compare local issues with those raised in Orlando, Paris, andTokyo.CLIT2050.Globalization and culture (6 credits)When Michael Jordan becomes the most popular sports figure in Mainland China and South Africa,does this mean that we are all becoming more alike? Or are we splitting apart, as the rise <strong>of</strong> newnationalisms in Yugoslavia and India would seem to indicate? Why has rap music become globallypopular? This course will look at a variety <strong>of</strong> contemporary phenomena from pop culture to nationalismin terms <strong>of</strong> the global processes <strong>of</strong> circulation and transformation that are changing the world we live in.Special attention will be paid to <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> culture and its changing role in Asia and the world.CLIT2051.Jane Austen and popular culture (6 credits)This course will read Jane Austen's novels through the visual medium <strong>of</strong> television series, filmadaptations and the internet. It will consider the successful translation <strong>of</strong> Austen from high to popularand to global cultural form. It will study the ways in which her novels have been re-invented to reflectissues <strong>of</strong> contemporary importance such as feminism with its critique <strong>of</strong> marriage and masculinity andits call for more open expression <strong>of</strong> desire and sexuality. It will historicize this revision by analyzing thestatus <strong>of</strong> women, the role <strong>of</strong> the family and the important <strong>of</strong> courtship in Austen's original novels.CLIT2052.Chinese urban culture (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)With specific reference to major Chinese cities, for example Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, and <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>,the course is designed to examine how forces <strong>of</strong> modernization, colonialism and globalization havedrastically transformed these cities. It explores problems <strong>of</strong> urban culture and the changing meaning <strong>of</strong>'Chineseness' through major works <strong>of</strong> fiction, cinema, architecture and other relevant cultural texts.Although no prerequisites are required, students are advised to study CLIT2028 <strong>The</strong> City as CulturalText before taking this course.CLIT2053.Special topic I (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> course is designed to teach the work <strong>of</strong> a single writer or film director, presenting it in detail anddrawing relevant comparisons with texts and works <strong>of</strong> other authors.
