II/III 'Smoke signals': Native American literature and American culture (6credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)America was not 'discovered' by European explorers and adventurers. <strong>The</strong> continent was peopled byhundreds <strong>of</strong> tribes representing many cultures and many histories. <strong>The</strong>se natives (what to call them –Indians, Native Americans, First Peoples – remains a subject <strong>of</strong> contention) <strong>of</strong>fered the newcomers analternative way <strong>of</strong> life; they challenged their Western/European cultural assumptions; but, most <strong>of</strong> all,they were perceived as a threat to be eliminated as the settlers/colonizers moved ever westward. In thiscourse we will not only examine the Native American literary tradition, but we will also investigate theprocesses by which this tradition has entered into the dominant culture, how it has been transformed bysuch encounters, and how, in turn, it has altered the national identity.Assessment: 100% coursework.AMER2021. II/III On the road again: U.S.A. field trip in American Studies (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes by permission <strong>of</strong>instructor.)Concentrating on Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Williamsburg, and Orlando, this course willexplore the variety and complexity <strong>of</strong> American culture. Part <strong>of</strong> this course may include interactionwith students from the College <strong>of</strong> William and Mary to experience American university life and studyWilliamsburg and Washington D.C. Television and American culture (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)Television has been a dramatic force in US history and culture. US television shows and programmingstyles have been exported globally or are modified to suit diverse cultural settings yet little criticalanalysis <strong>of</strong> the power <strong>of</strong> television is present in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. This course <strong>of</strong>fers students a chance toconsider the impact <strong>of</strong> television inside and outside <strong>of</strong> the US. Topics to be discussed in the courseinclude: <strong>The</strong> history <strong>of</strong> television, strategies for critical TV viewing, war and TV, educational television,youth culture and TV, and TV programming in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. Guest lectures will be given from themedia industry.Assessment: 100% coursework.
