114CHIN3301.Translation criticism II (6 credits)Select literary translations in Chinese and English will be analyzed in terms <strong>of</strong> the specific problemsencountered in the process <strong>of</strong> translating. In some cases, different versions <strong>of</strong> the same original text willbe studied in comparative terms.Assessment: 25% coursework, 75% examination.CHIN3302.Advanced language studies for translation II (6 credits)A continuation <strong>of</strong> CHIN2302, including a contrastive study <strong>of</strong> the Chinese and English languages, andan examination <strong>of</strong> language styles and language use for special purposes, the emphasis being on thestudy <strong>of</strong> styles both as a problem <strong>of</strong> translation and as a part <strong>of</strong> the language skills essential totranslators.Assessment: 25% coursework, 75% examination.CHIN3303.Translation for special purposes (6 credits)A general survey <strong>of</strong> the problems and techniques <strong>of</strong> translating for the media and civil service, and forlegal and commercial purposes, with practice (including a Long Translation Project) in translatingbetween Chinese and English.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.CHIN3304.Oral translation (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> main emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course is on the training in consecutive interpretation. A small number <strong>of</strong>exercises in simultaneous interpretation will also be included. <strong>The</strong> pre-recorded texts in Chinese andEnglish are, in the main, on current affairs. <strong>The</strong>re will be drills on note-taking, shadowing, abstracting,sight translating, and the translating <strong>of</strong> numbers. <strong>The</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> the student's oral skills in generaland oral English in particular will be among the aims <strong>of</strong> this course.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.GROUP D: DISSERTATIONThird Year CourseCHIN3401.Dissertation (12 credits)A short dissertation will be written on a subject approved by the supervisor and the Department. Thiscourse is only open to students majoring in the Department <strong>of</strong> Chinese.Assessment: 100% coursework.ASSESSMENTCoursework assessment will be based on performance in tutorials and seminars, and on the strength <strong>of</strong>essays and such other exercises as can be assessed continually.Each course will be examined by a written paper <strong>of</strong> not more than 2-hour duration except those courseswhich are assessed by 100% coursework. <strong>The</strong> course CHIN3304. Oral translation will be examinedorally.
