I.2 Rudiments <strong>of</strong> music theory (3 credits)This course provides students with a technical knowledge <strong>of</strong> Western art music with a focus onfour-part harmony, simple counterpoint, aural training and general musicianship. Part <strong>of</strong> this knowledgewill be acquired through computer-assisted self-study.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (60%) and an examination (40%).MUSI1010. I.3 Analysis <strong>of</strong> Western art music I (6 credits)This course covers the theory and practice <strong>of</strong> Western art music from selected style periods. Emphasis isplaced on typical harmonic and formal procedures. Primary activities include in-depth analyses <strong>of</strong>selected works, drills on various harmonic syntaxes, and short exercises in historical styles. Somecomputer-assisted self-study may be required. Prerequisite: students taking this course must first passthe <strong>The</strong>ory Placement Test, or have successfully completed Rudiments <strong>of</strong> Music <strong>The</strong>ory.Assessment will be made based on coursework (100%).MUSI1004. I.4 Introduction to musics <strong>of</strong> the world (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course, which is open to all students, introduces a range <strong>of</strong> music from throughout the worldincluding the North America, Southeast Asia, West Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe. Genres such assalsa and zydeco (United States), gamelan gong kebyar (Bali),/ bawa and highlife (Ghana), djembe(Senegal), son and rumba (Cuba), samba (Brazil), flamenco (Spain), and rembetika (Greece) areexamined in their social, cultural and historical contexts. <strong>The</strong> course also discusses issues raised bycross-cultural research. Practical performance in a Department ensemble may be included in the course.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI1005. I.5 Introduction to music in Western culture (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course, which is open to all students, focuses on a number <strong>of</strong> set musical works in order to explorethe history <strong>of</strong> Western art music. <strong>The</strong> course emphasizes familiarity with a selection <strong>of</strong> representativemusical works through weekly listening assignments. Training in the use <strong>of</strong> the Music Library isincluded in the course. Ability to read musical notation will be an advantage.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).MUSI1006. I.6 Music technology (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course, which is open to all students, is a hands-on introduction to the use <strong>of</strong> music technologyincluding music notation, sequencing, synthesizer techniques, and digital audio. Technical methods <strong>of</strong>information access, especially in the Music Library, are introduced.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).This course fulfills the Information Technology requirement.
