217JAPN3012.Japanese language III(a) (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This language course is open to students who have successfully completed JAPN2020. <strong>The</strong> courseprovides further training on a balanced range <strong>of</strong> language skills. In addition, the course is designed toenhance students’ understanding <strong>of</strong> Japanese society and culture so that they can use the obtained skillsappropriately.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.Examination: A two-hour written examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester.Prerequisite: Japanese language II(a).JAPN3013.Business Japanese (6 credits)This language intensive course teaches students to be able to read and write some <strong>of</strong> the most importantkinds <strong>of</strong> business documents, especially letters. <strong>The</strong>re will be two classes each week. One classconcentrates on reading and understanding business letters and being able to summarize their mainpoints in English. In the other class, students learn about the structure <strong>of</strong> business letters and thevocabulary and expressions needed to compose them. Coursework assignments include composingbusiness letters based on what has been learned in the class. Some business telephone conversation mayalso be taught if time allows.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.Examination: A two-hour written examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester.JAPN3014.Project in Japanese business (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> Project in Japanese Business interdisciplinary content course is designed to integrate the student’sknowledge <strong>of</strong> Japanese language, society and culture, and to apply it to a piece <strong>of</strong> work for a Japanesebusiness organization. Through a short-term internship, the student will gain real life experiencedealing with Japanese managers while polishing his or her communication and interpersonal skills. In asubsequent essay, the student will report and analyze the problems that he or she has encountered usingtheoretical frameworks.Assessment:Prerequisite:100% coursework (Proposal, Project, and Essay).Japanese Language II and at least one language intensive course and twointerdisciplinary content courses.Second and Third YearsJAPN1007.Japanese language I(a) (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first and second year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This Japanese language course is open to students with no previous knowledge <strong>of</strong> the language. <strong>The</strong>course provides a balanced training in reading, writing, speaking and listening and is intended to helpstudents build linguistic and communicative skills in Japanese.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.Examination: A two-hour written examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester.
