169THIRD YEAR LEVEL<strong>The</strong> following courses are open only to third year students and will be taught in a seminar format exceptfor FINE3005 and FINE3007.FINE3001.Perspectives and methodology in Chinese and Japanese art (6 credits)This course will focus on art historical methodology and strategies in the fields <strong>of</strong> Chinese and Japaneseart. Students will prepare a seminar paper drawing on knowledge <strong>of</strong> a certain area, but will further beencouraged to demonstrate a critical approach to broader methodological and theoretical issues.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: Fine <strong>Arts</strong> majors, or by special permission <strong>of</strong> the instructors.FINE3003.Museum studies workshop (6 credits)This course aims to give students an introduction to the principles and practises <strong>of</strong> working in an artmuseum. <strong>The</strong> course will be conducted at the <strong>University</strong> Museum and Art Gallery, and students will begiven the opportunity to develop curatorial skills by completing projects relating to an art exhibition orother curatorial work. Students majoring in Fine <strong>Arts</strong> will be given first preference, but other third yearstudents fulfilling the prerequisite may apply.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: FINE1004 for non-majors.FINE3004.Museum studies internship (6 credits)This course allows students to work with senior members <strong>of</strong> the staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Museum and ArtGallery on a project relating to a current exhibition or the museum's permanent collection. <strong>The</strong> coursewill further develop the skills taught in FINE3003.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: FINE3003.FINE3005.Dissertation on special topic (12 credits)Students with a focus <strong>of</strong> interest and the approval <strong>of</strong> a teacher may undertake independent study toproduce a paper <strong>of</strong> some ambition under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a teacher.Assessment: 100% coursework.FINE3006.Art history methodology workshop (6 credits)This course is taught in the form <strong>of</strong> seminars. It requires active participation from students, and isintended for those in their third year who have already engaged seriously with art history during theirprevious study. It aims to deepen students' understanding <strong>of</strong> the methods used by art historians byintroducing various debates about interpretation. Students are expected to write a paper concerning anarea <strong>of</strong> art history or visual culture <strong>of</strong> their own choice, in which they demonstrate their sensitivity toquestions <strong>of</strong> method.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: Students should normally have taken at least one Fine <strong>Arts</strong> course in their first year, and atleast two Fine <strong>Arts</strong> courses (in any subject area) in their second year.
