238Second/Third YearsLANG0001.Introduction to Italian life and culture (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course will give an outline <strong>of</strong> Italian civilization and contemporary culture in its manifold aspects,ranging from arts, history, music, Italian customs and traditions in the different regions and cities, tocinema and tourism, food, fashion, environment, education, sport and politics with particular focus onthe youth world. <strong>The</strong> teacher will present a variety <strong>of</strong> subjects making use <strong>of</strong> videos and authenticmaterials (music, magazines, advertising, etc.), from which the students will choose topics and discussthem in discussion groups. Each group will then present, at the end <strong>of</strong> the course, a project on aparticular subject. In case the students should be interested, some basic knowledge <strong>of</strong> the Italianlanguage will be <strong>of</strong>fered.Pre-requisite: Nil.Assessment: continuous assessment and projects.Medium <strong>of</strong> instruction: English. Knowledge <strong>of</strong> Italian is not necessary.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the second semester.Third YearLANG3012.Italian III (12 credits)This course is taught throughout the year and continues to build on the two previous years' work on amore advanced level. <strong>The</strong> intention is to lead participants towards a fairly comprehensiveunderstanding <strong>of</strong> the Italian language features through the study <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> documents (written,audio and video). <strong>The</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> documents will also serve as a basis for discussion on some socialissues regarding contemporary Italy, as well as her history and cultural background.Prerequisites: Students wishing to be admitted to Italian III will be required to attend an intensivesession (Transition 2) usually held in June.Students wishing to be admitted to Italian III without having previously completedItalian II and Transition 2 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board through theDirector <strong>of</strong> the Language Centre that they have attained elsewhere the required standard.Assessment: One examination and a coursework element which shall count 60% and 40% respectively<strong>of</strong> the final grade awarded.Examination: <strong>The</strong> examination for Italian III consists <strong>of</strong> one written paper <strong>of</strong> 3-hour duration and aseparate oral examination.Coursework may include the following: (i) periodic assignments; (ii) progress tests; and (iii) othercoursework as prescribed, such as long essays, translations, directed reading, etc.Portuguese CoursesFirst YearLANG1025.Portuguese for beginners - Part I (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)<strong>The</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> this course is to enable students to reach a basic communicative competence in Portuguese,while developing their listening, speaking, writing and reading skills. Development <strong>of</strong> self-learningstrategies will also be introduced in the later part <strong>of</strong> the course.Assessment: 100% coursework. Coursework includes: (i) progress tests, (ii) participation in class, and(iii) assignments.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.
