312PSYC0043.Chinese psychology (6 credits)This course explores the psychology <strong>of</strong> the Chinese people from 'a native's point <strong>of</strong> view'.Psychological research findings using the Chinese as subjects will be reviewed and reinterpreted withculturally mediated meaning systems. Students are encouraged to adopt this perspective to discuss andto examine local issues and phenomena in class discussions and in their research projects. <strong>The</strong> courseprepares students for a career in fields where interacting with local Chinese people is essential.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.Prerequisite : PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003).PSYC0044.Organizational psychology (6 credits)This course surveys the application <strong>of</strong> psychological principles and methods to the analysis <strong>of</strong> thecomplex relationships that exist between people and the social/cultural environment in their workorganization. Topics include work motivation, job satisfaction, leadership, group relations, conflicts,organization design, and cross-cultural issues.Assessment: 60% coursework, 40% examination.Prerequisite: PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003).PSYC0045.Personal and social competencies I (3 credits)Please refer to PSYC0025 for the course description. Students are required to take two modules otherthan those they have taken in PSYC0025, PSYC0026.Assessment: 100% coursework.PSYC0046.Personal and social competencies II (3 credits)Please refer to PSYC0025 for the course description. Students are required to take two modules otherthan those they have taken in PSYC0025, PSYC0026 and PSYC0045.Assessment: 100% coursework.PYSC0047.Survey research (6 credits)This course focuses on the technical and practical aspects <strong>of</strong> designing and conducting survey research.It is a course that would be appropriate for anyone intending to go into administrative, managerial, salesor pr<strong>of</strong>essional careers after graduation, since surveys are such common ways <strong>of</strong> assessing consumer orclient values or attitudes, market forces, social issues, or policy analysis.Survey methods can include personal interviews, mail surveys or self-administered questionnaires,telephone interviews, or, more recently, on-line surveys. Examples <strong>of</strong> more specific topics coveredwould be questionnaire design, sampling methods, data collection, data analysis, compilation <strong>of</strong> surveyreports, misuse <strong>of</strong> surveys, and bias (intentional and unintentional) in surveys. Students will beprovided with hands-on experience in designing and conducting survey research in a computer assistedtelephone interview laboratory and may have the opportunity <strong>of</strong> helping in the ongoing researchprogrammes <strong>of</strong> HKU's Social Sciences Research Centre that typically attract media attention.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.
