This course focuses on internal developments, rather than on foreign policy; andthus includes topics such as Slavophilism vs. Westernizers, the tsarist reaction, and then reform underNicholas I and Alexander II, the revolutionary movement from the Decembrists to the Bolsheviks,industrialisation, the Nationalities Question, and the peasantry before and after Emancipation. This course examines the interaction <strong>of</strong> human systems with other natural systems thathave shaped the course <strong>of</strong> Chinese history and society.Assessment: 100% coursework.HIST2024.A century <strong>of</strong> business in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>, 1842-1949 (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course traces the business history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> after it became a British colony until theCommunist Takeover <strong>of</strong> China in 1949. <strong>The</strong> topics covered in the course include <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> as acentre <strong>of</strong> opium trade, the development <strong>of</strong> Western businesses, the mode and practice <strong>of</strong> Chinesebusinesses such as the Nam Pak <strong>Hong</strong>, relations between Western and Chinese businesses, the impact <strong>of</strong>Chinese nationalism, the world wars, the Great Depression, and communist control in China on <strong>Hong</strong><strong>Kong</strong> business.Assessment: 100% coursework.HIST2025.British <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> and China 1895-1945 (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course concerns itself with the most uneasy and sometimes turbulent relations between <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>as a British colony, the population <strong>of</strong> which is almost entirely Chinese, and China which was goingthrough what was perhaps the most dramatic and critical half century <strong>of</strong> its history. How British <strong>Hong</strong><strong>Kong</strong> responded to such momentous developments as the 1911 Revolution, the rise <strong>of</strong> Chinesenationalism in the 1920's and Japan's progressive aggression makes a fascinating study.Assessment: 100% coursework.
