226In their second and third years <strong>of</strong> study, students pursuing a major in French must take a total <strong>of</strong> 48credits <strong>of</strong> French courses which should normally be distributed as follows: in the Second Year, 24credits from courses at Level 200, <strong>of</strong> which 12 credits must be from the core language course, i.e.,French Language II.1; in the Third Year, 24 credits from courses at Level 300, <strong>of</strong> which 12 credits mustbe from the core language course, i.e., French Language III.1. (See list <strong>of</strong> French courses). In addition,students will normally be required to take part in an intensive course <strong>of</strong>fered by the Centre at the end <strong>of</strong>the fourth semester (usually in June). Alternatively, students will be strongly encouraged to participatein a linguistic stay in France during the summer.Language MinorsA language minor will provide students with a good command <strong>of</strong> the four different language skills:speaking, listening, reading and writing. A language minor will also allow students to gain a deeperinsight into the contemporary life and culture <strong>of</strong> the respective country. Languages combine well withall major programmes <strong>of</strong>fered within the <strong>Arts</strong> Faculty and they also provide students will additionalopportunities to pursue further studies overseas.In order to qualify for a Minor in a language, students must complete a total <strong>of</strong> 24 credits in their second(12 credits) and third (12 credits) years <strong>of</strong> studies in one <strong>of</strong> the languages listed below:French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Thai.<strong>The</strong> recommended courses for a language minor: (All these courses have prerequisites.)French: LANG2001. Participants will acquire a basic knowledge in the four areas <strong>of</strong> competence (listening,speaking, reading and writing) with a particular emphasis on communicative skills. Classes will beconducted in small groups in order to ensure a high degree <strong>of</strong> interactivity between participants andteachers. Conversation groups and laboratory groups will also be arranged separately on a regularbasis.Prerequisite: Nil.Assessment: 100% coursework. Includes: (i) progress tests, (ii) participation in class and (iii) variousassignments.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.
