162FINE1007.Introduction to photography theory and practice (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course aims to introduce students to principles <strong>of</strong> contemporary photography theory and a criticalpractice <strong>of</strong> the photographic medium. In addition to the teaching <strong>of</strong> basic photographic techniques, thecourse will also discuss how we can assess photographs with critical tools such as aesthetics andcultural theories.Assessment: 100% coursework.SECOND YEAR LEVELFINE2001History <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>of</strong> Europe (6 credits)This course is open only to students who have not taken FINE1001 and who intend to major in Fine <strong>Arts</strong>.See the entry under FINE1001 for general course description. <strong>The</strong> coursework will differ from that <strong>of</strong>FINE1001 and will be commensurate with the ability and experience <strong>of</strong> second-year students.Assessment : 50% coursework, 50% examination.FINE2002History <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>of</strong> China (6 credits)This course is open only to students who have not taken FINE1004 and who intend to major in Fine <strong>Arts</strong>.See the entry under FINE1004 for general course description. <strong>The</strong> coursework will differ from that <strong>of</strong>FINE1004 and will be commensurate with the ability and experience <strong>of</strong> second-year students.Assessment : 50% coursework, 50% examination.SECOND AND THIRD YEARS LEVELS<strong>The</strong> following courses are open to both second and third year students. If staffing arrangements permit, the following courses will be <strong>of</strong>fered:FINE2003.Early Chinese painting (Warring States to Southern Song) (6 credits)This course will cover the history <strong>of</strong> Chinese painting from the Warring States to Southern Song dynasty.With an emphasis on methodology and connoisseurship, it will explore the transformation <strong>of</strong> forms <strong>of</strong>expression and styles <strong>of</strong> periods and individuals, as well as ideological and social factors behind thechanges. <strong>The</strong> relationship <strong>of</strong> Chinese painting theory to Chinese philosophy, aesthetics, and literaturewill also be discussed.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: FINE1004.FINE2004.Later Chinese painting (Yuan to Qing) (6 credits)This course will cover the history <strong>of</strong> Chinese painting from the Yuan to Qing dynasty. With an emphasison methodology and connoisseurship, it will explore the transformation <strong>of</strong> forms <strong>of</strong> expression andstyles <strong>of</strong> periods and individuals, as well as ideological and social factors behind the changes. <strong>The</strong>relationship <strong>of</strong> Chinese painting theory to Chinese philosophy, aesthetics, and literature will also bediscussed.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: FINE1004.
