MUSI1011. I.8 Orchestral studies and techniques 1 (for students in their first year <strong>of</strong>study) (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)Students participate in weekly rehearsals and performances with the <strong>University</strong>'s orchestra over twosemesters. Besides musical skills, this course focuses on teamwork, discipline and creativity. To gainadmission to the course, students must have reached the standard <strong>of</strong> ABRSM Grade 6 or the equivalenton one <strong>of</strong> the following: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin,viola, cello or double bass and must pass an audition.Assessment will be based on participation and a practical examination.263MUSI1012. I.9 Ensemble music performance (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course, which is open to all students, focuses on musical performance. Students participate inweekly rehearsals by the Department's performing ensembles – the Choral Workshop and Gamelan- over two semesters.Assessment will be based on participation and a practical examination.MUSI1013. I.10 Cantonese opera workshop (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course, which is open to all, trains students in the singing <strong>of</strong> arias from Cantonese opera and otheraspects <strong>of</strong> performance.
