98CHINESE<strong>The</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Chinese is to promote the understanding <strong>of</strong> Chinese language, literatureand history; to further the ability <strong>of</strong> the students in the use <strong>of</strong> the Chinese language; and to study thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> the Chinese civilization and its place in the modern world.<strong>The</strong> degree courses in the Department <strong>of</strong> Chinese are normally taught in Chinese. Course design isbased on the assumption that the students have attained facility in the use <strong>of</strong> the Chinese languagebefore entering the <strong>University</strong>, and that they have also acquired sufficient mastery <strong>of</strong> the Englishlanguage to enable them to use freely references and relevant works published in English. Provisionmay be made from time to time for elective courses on various aspects <strong>of</strong> the Chinese civilization.<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>fers four majors in the second and third years. Students are required to take not lessthan a total <strong>of</strong> 48 credits <strong>of</strong> second and third year courses in the specified group(s), and to meet otherspecified requirements, if any. <strong>The</strong> four majors are as follows:(i) Chinese Language and Literature: Group A.(ii) Chinese History: Group B.(iii) Translation: Group C (please refer to Group C for other requirements).(iv) Chinese Studies: Groups A and B.Students are required to take the following first year courses as prerequisites for the majors unless theHead <strong>of</strong> Department approves otherwise:(i) Chinese Language and Literature: CHIN1101. A survey <strong>of</strong> the Chinese language and a total<strong>of</strong> not less than 6 credits <strong>of</strong> other first year courses.(ii) Translation: CHIN1311. Introduction to translation and CHIN1312. Language studies fortranslation I.<strong>The</strong>re are no first year prerequisites for the majors in Chinese History and Chinese Studies.Not all the courses listed below will be <strong>of</strong>fered every year. Students should refer to the departmentalundergraduate handbook, published yearly and in the summer usually, for the courses on <strong>of</strong>fer in thenext academic year.GROUP A: CHINESE LANGUAGE AND LITERATUREFirst Year CoursesCHIN1101.A survey <strong>of</strong> the Chinese language (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)An introduction to the various aspects <strong>of</strong> the Chinese language: etymology, phonology, lexicology andgrammar, with special reference to the cultural context and its developments in the twentieth century.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.
